High Blood Pressure Medication – Which Medications Should I Take?

By LisaB

Many experts recommend a switch in medication for hypertension to reduce risk of serious illness. However, for those with chronic high blood pressure (hypertension), fluctuating readings are usually a warning signal that you may have to alter medication. And unfortunately, these fluctuations often are associated with an increased risk of premature death. For this reason, changing medication is not always the best solution. In many cases, your doctor can recommend alternative treatment options that may work better for you.

When considering your high blood pressure medications, you should also consider alternative options. If you’ve already tried medications and found no relief, don’t give up hope. Even Ace inhibitors (also known as Atacda) are considered by many to be the most effective medicine for hypertension.

It’s important to note that the type of medication you take is critical to your success. In other words, if you’ve already tried prescription medications and still aren’t seeing significant results, you may want to consider switching to an alternative medication. Your doctor will know which medications are the most effective for you based on your blood pressure measurements, so it’s important to listen carefully when he makes his recommendation. And even if your physician has previously recommended medication, there’s nothing wrong with asking him to recommend alternative therapy, too.

What your doctor will typically recommend for a heart attack sufferer is a diuretic like sodium bicarbonate or folic acid. These medications will cause your heart to produce more blood to dilate the arteries and make your heart healthier. Unfortunately, a diuretic like these can cause your arterial walls to become thickened, increasing your chances of hypertension. If your physician has previously recommended diuretics as treatment for a heart attack patient, you’ll need to avoid taking them for a while until you can get back to your normal blood pressure reading.

The most effective medication to treat hypertension is called Angiotensin Receptors Inhibitors, or ARBs. ARBs work by blocking the action of the stress hormone angiotensin. The goal is to reduce the number of stressed blood vessels in your body, which in turn helps to prevent constriction and narrowing of the arteries. Although doctors often prescribe one single drug, there are actually several types of ARBs, so you’ll want to discuss your treatment options with your doctor to find the one that’s right for you.

Many people successfully treat high blood pressure medications without any negative side effects. Your health care professional can help you determine which medication will work best for your specific situation and lifestyle. Talk to your doctor today and let him know what your goals are for controlling your hypertension. In the meantime, keep an eye on your blood pressure at home, and monitor any progress that you make.
